THREATENED MISCARRIAGE

An unusual Russian study was undertaken by physicians at the Medical Academy in Nizhny Novgorod to determine whether ozone therapy could help pregnant women avoid miscarriage. One hundred ten pregnant women were selected for the study. All had had previous miscarriages and were determined to be in danger of another miscarriage by their physicians. Terms of pregnancy ranged from eight to twenty-two weeks.

After a complete physical exam, it was found that many of the women had low levels of several important hormones, including estriol, progesterone, placental lactogen, and cortisol. Researchers also discovered that many had poor immune levels, indicated in part by low phago- cytic activity and deficient IgM (immunoglobulin gamma M) levels in the blood. Some of the expectant mothers also suffered from hormonal imbalances, infections like chlamydia, and immune disorders.

Ozone therapy was provided by intravenous applications of 0.9 percent ozonized sodium chloride (NaCl) solutions. A total of five infusions were given over a five-day period. The results were very encouraging. The researchers found the following:

Fetoplacental hormones (including estriol, progesterone, placental lactogen, prolactin, and cortisol) in the blood became normalized.

Immune levels improved, as evidenced by normalized levels of phagocytic stimulation and immune complexes in the blood.

Lipid peroxidation normalized, which appeared to help preserve the membranes of the placenta’s cells from free radical damage.
